| AREAS
OF ARTISTIC INTEREST NEAR TO THE HOTEL TOLEDO |
| PALAZZO
DORIA D'ANGRI: Situated at the corner between Via Toledo and
Piazza VII Settembre. It was built in 1755 by Luigi Vanvitelli.
From its balcony, Giuseppe Garibaldi proclaimed, after Naples
was conquered on the 7th of settembre 1860, the union to the Reign
of the Due (two) Sicilie in Italy. |
PALAZZO
MADDALONI: was built by Cesare d'Avalos in 1582 and ransomed
in the 18th Century by the Carafa di Maddaloni, who trusted
its growth in size to Cosimo Fonzago; and saw the construction
of hanging open gallery and the magnificent doorway in Via Maddaloni.
The grande staircases were richly decorated by Fiacomo Del Po,
Francesco De Mura and Fedele Fischetti. |
DUOMO:
The cathedral is set back slightly in respect to the road and
closed in by two buildings. On that same spot, there were probably
already places of worship which occupied the area during the
Greek-Roman era. It was built at the request of Carlo d'Angiò
or his son, Carlo lo Zoppo, in a Gothic-Angioino style. Due
to numerous earthquakes and various adjustments during changes
of royalty, the cathedral underwent mutations which changed
its structure profoundly. From the Gothic architecture, only
three doorways remain dating back to 1407. In its interior,
visitors can admire the Chapel of San Lorenzo, adorned with
frescoes from the first half of the 14th Century and attributed
to Lillo da Orvieto. The Tocco Chapel, the Minutolo Chapel and
the Santa Restituita Chapel, are all part of the Paleo-Christian
cathedral from the 4th Century. The San Gennaro Cathedral is
one with Naples, the chapel hosts the famous ampoules with the
blood of the Saint, which every year on the 19th September,
manifests a miracle. The cathedral should be visited on that
day, when there are hundreds of believers who invade it. |
